Assessing learners´ skills and competences

Assessment is an important part of a training course. Without you might not really know where to start (referring to learners’ prior knowledge/ skills/ competences or their expectations) or if the course has achieved its goals (referring to learners’ achieved knowledge/ skills/ competences or their expectations) or any course related improvement possibilities (referring to online training provision and bugs, organisational or delivery problems etc.).

Participants need to have the opportunity to assess their knowledge and competence in dealing with finances at the beginning and end of a structured training/ learning activity. At the beginning of a training course, they should be given the chance to honestly assess their already existing skills and competences regarding an efficient and responsible handling of finances and which gaps are still needed to be closed.

Based on these results, learners can focus on learning activities that will help them to enhance their knowledge and skills, guided by a teacher who (and/ or online learning system that) provides them with suitable learning methods.

After completing a variety of learning activities, participants should be given the chance to reassess their knowledge and competences. By this, they should be enabled to recognise their learning progresses and, step by step, set up confidence and routine in handling finances efficiently and independently. Teachers (or a learning system), knowing the results, are able to plan next steps and highlight learning progresses.

The satisfaction of the participants with the different learning offers should also be determined and the results used in the sense of an ongoing quality improvement process. A final assessment also provides feedback to learners about their learning outcomes and their level of achievement.
